Adolf (Adi) Dassler founded adidas in 1949 after a split from his brother Rudolf, whom he had been in business with since the eary 1920s. Rudolf went on to form Puma.

Anyone into athletic shoes or sports will immediately recognize the adidas brand by the iconic "three stripes" which is incorporated into all products.

In 1995 adidas went public. The year 1997 saw adidas AG acquire the Salomon Group with the brands Salomon, TaylorMade, Mavic and Bonfire. Parts of the Salomon Group would be sold off in 2005. In 2006 adidas bought Reebok.
